The service

Why you might need a panel upgrade

Most Boston homes were built long before EVs, heat pumps, induction ranges, and 50-amp hot tubs. A 60A or 100A service that was fine in 1980 is often overloaded today — and an overloaded panel is a fire risk, a nuisance (breakers tripping), and a dealbreaker if you're selling or insuring.

Signs it's time:

  • Breakers trip regularly when you run normal appliances
  • Your panel is a Federal Pacific, Zinsco, or Sylvania — known safety issues
  • You're adding an EV charger, heat pump, or finishing a basement
  • Your insurance company flagged the panel
  • You want to sell and the inspector called it out
  • Your panel is full — no open breaker slots

What's included in an upgrade

A full MazElectric panel upgrade includes:

  • New main panel sized to your loads (100A, 200A, or 400A)
  • Coordination with your utility (Eversource or National Grid) to pull the meter
  • New service entrance cable, meter can, and grounding where required
  • All existing circuits re-landed, labeled clearly, and tested
  • Arc-fault (AFCI) and ground-fault (GFCI) breakers where code requires
  • Permit pulled with your city/town and signed off by the electrical inspector
  • Clean-up and a walkthrough so you understand what's in your panel

Timing & disruption

A straightforward 100A-to-200A upgrade in a single-family home is typically a one-day job with roughly 4–6 hours of no power. We schedule the utility meter pull in advance so the power-off window is predictable. Larger services (400A, three-phase commercial) take longer and usually need more advance scheduling with the utility.

What it costs

Panel upgrades are quoted individually based on service size, the condition of your existing service entrance, mast work, grounding, and any sub-panels. We'll give you a written, firm estimate before starting. No surprises on the invoice.

FAQ

Panel upgrade questions.

How long will my power be out?
Usually 4–6 hours for a standard residential upgrade. We coordinate the utility ahead of time and keep the window tight. Fridges and freezers stay cold for that long with the door closed — no problem.
Do I need a permit?
Yes — every city in the Boston area requires an electrical permit for panel upgrades. We pull it, schedule the inspector, and make sure it passes. Having a signed-off permit on file helps when you sell or insure.
Will this raise my property value?
Not in a huge dollar amount, but a modern 200A panel removes a common inspection finding and makes your home easier to insure and sell. It's one of those things buyers notice when it's missing.
Can you replace a Federal Pacific, Zinsco, or Sylvania panel?
Absolutely — that's one of the most common calls we get. Those brands have documented safety issues. We recommend replacing rather than repairing.
Do you install sub-panels?
Yes — sub-panels for additions, detached garages, in-law units, or basement finishes. Often a sub-panel is the right answer if your main service is adequate but you need more breakers in a specific area.
